Philadelphia 76ers general manager Sam Hinkie sent an unusual letter of resignation to the management group that owns the team. The 13 page letter, dated April 6, 2016 – has been picked up, referenced and re-posted on a number of sites – originating with ESPN. Hinkie begins the letter saying “…I hope to accomplish here is to give you insight into what has transpired behind the scenes in ways you might not have otherwise heard about. Many of you attended our most recent board meeting in New York, where many of these topics were addressed. But for all twelve of you, I hope that this provides a deeper look into what you have at your organization. Accordingly, you should anticipate some mild cheerleading (of others) sprinkled with a healthy dose of self-flagellation about things I’ve done wrong.” The letter quotes a dozen high profile individuals from American politics (President Lincoln), business (Warren Buffett and Elon Musk), physicist James Clerk Maxwell, as well a referencing fans, players and coaches. It is a lucid, thoughtful and unusual communication, well worth reading.
