Critical science and engineering skills that can be gained only through hands-on experience are disappearing as a generation of experts retire…Earlier this year, for instance, the Government Accountability Office reported that the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration no longer remembers how to make a classified component crucial to refurbishing nuclear warheads. Few records of the process were kept, and almost everyone involved in its production 30 years ago has retired or died.”
