Press release: “The UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) issued its ninth bimonthly report on the human rights situation in the country covering the period 1 November to 31 December 2006. The report describes the rampant violence which continues to claim the lives of thousands of innocent Iraqi civilians. The Report indicated that 6,376 civilians were killed and at least 6,875 wounded in acts of violence during the reporting period, which puts the total civilian casualty figure for the year 2006 at 34,452 dead and 36,685 injured. The situation is particularly grave in Baghdad, where most casualties and unidentified bodies that are daily recorded also bear signs of torture.”
