The WSJ reported that the Bush Administration used Treasury Dept. civil servants to compile and publish an analysis, via the agency’s webite, labeled as a press release, that actually constituted a campaign related document critical of Senator John Kerry’s proposed tax plan. According to Kerry’s campaign, this action is a violation of the Hatch Act, which specifies permitted and prohibited campaign activities of federal and DC employees. The Washington Post reported that Sen. Frank Lautenberg has requested an investigaton by the Treasury OIG into possible Hatch Act violations.
