“We at Chilling Effects are thrilled to share Reddit’s announcement that the site has begun sharing takedown notices with us! Following on the heels of the release of its first transparency report earlier this year, this move reflects a transition by Reddit toward targeted removals of content in a manner that makes clear when that content was removed in response to a third-party request. In Reddit’s own words: “Let us pretend we have this post I made on reddit, suspiciously titled “Test post, please ignore”, as seen in its original state here, featuring one of my cats. Additionally, there is a comment on that post which is the first paragraph of this post. Should we receive a valid DMCA request for this content and deem it legally actionable, rather than being greeted with censored Snoo and no other relevant information, visitors to the post instead will now see a message stating that we, as admins of reddit.com, removed the content and a brief reason why. A more detailed, although still abridged, version of the notice will be posted to /r/ChillingEffects, and a sister post submitted to chillingeffects.org.” Reddit is one of the Internet’s most vibrant ecosystems of user commentary and content, and we are excited to have the opportunity to share information about Reddit’s takedown practices with the Chilling Effects research community and the broader public.
