Military Concerns Result in New Blogging Regulation

Wired reports the “U.S. Army has ordered soldiers to stop posting to blogs or sending personal e-mail messages, without first clearing the content with a superior officer…The new rules (PDF) obtained by Wired News require a commander be consulted before every blog update.”

  • Via Center for Media and Democracy, “Steven Aftergood posted a related U.S. Army presentation on “OPSEC in the Blogosphere.”
  • And following, this press release: “Senators Norm Coleman (R-MN), Tom Coburn (R-OK) and Jim DeMint (R-SC) today sent a letter to Defense Secretary Robert Gates requesting the department reexamine a regulation that will restrict military personal from participating in internet blogs. The Senators believe that a better balance can be found between protecting the release of secure information, while allowing troops to individually express themselves using this new medium.”
