“The U.S. imports some $2 trillion worth of products from more than 150 countries. This is expected to triple by 2015. HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt, Working Group Chair, reported that for American consumers to continue to enjoy the highest levels of food and product safety, our import safety strategy needs to shift from the current point-of-entry intervention model to a prevention with verification model that addresses product safety at every step of the producer to consumer import cycle. The Report recommends six building blocks and promises a follow-up action plan.”
