“Online misinformation is rampant. At the same time, the supply of factual and well-sourced knowledge has never been greater nor easier to access. Gigafact’s goal is to empower credible sources to counter the unsupported claims that are undermining democratic society, and provide a process for rebuilding our factual foundations. We believe that fact checks published by these trusted actors and corroborated by transparent, high quality sources can help the public sort fact from fiction. Gigafact equips newsrooms to push back on unsupported claims that affect their communities. We provide training, software, distribution help, startup funding, network membership and more to help newsrooms launch impactful fact-checking programs. From there, we make sure that their fact checks are seen by as many people as possible. Only organizations that conform to high standards of independence, transparency and accuracy are invited to join Gigafact’s network. This current phase of Gigafact is focused on local and regional newsrooms in the US, but we intend to expand to new issue areas and geographies over time.”
