Declan McCullagh reports on new legislation, The Internet Tax Non-Discrimination Act, co-sponsored by Rep. Chris Cox and Sen. Wyden.
Although not mentioned in Declan’s article, the bill numbers for the new legislation are S. 52 and H.R 49, and appear in the January 7, 2003 Congressional Record. The bills seek to “permanently extend the moratorium enacted by the Internet Tax Freedom Act.”
The two legislators were the co-authors of H.R. 1552 (also titled the Internet Tax Non-Discrimination Act), a law signed by the President extending the moratorium on new net taxes through November 1, 2003.
In related news from USA Today, Michigan is working toward joining 30 other states as participants in an agreement called the Streamlined Sales Tax Project (SSTP). The project would simplify the establishment of tax rates and collection processes for online purchases across state lines.
