El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala Account for 38% of Immigration Court Filings

Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse: “Three Central American countries — El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras — account for over a third (38 percent) of removal orders sought by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) so far this fiscal year, according to the latest Immigration Court data covering the period through the end of March 2015. During FY 2014, these three countries made up over half (55 percent) of filings in U.S. Immigration Court. For the first six months of FY 2015 (October 2014 through March 2015), the largest numbers of new filings by nationality were: Mexico (22,538), El Salvador (9,590), Guatemala (9,188), Honduras (5,927) and China (3,037). Filings involving individuals from Mexico made up 35 percent of the total, compared with only 25 percent from Mexico in FY 2014. Overall, new filings in the nation’s Immigration Courts are running at a slower pace than last year. During the first six months of FY 2015, court records show 65,198 new filings. Since there is often a delay between the date a Notice to Appear (NTA) is issued and when it shows up as a court filing, these are preliminary figures and should rise somewhat when recordings are complete.
