It caused over $81 billion in estimated property damage and resulted in more than 1,500 deaths. Three weeks later, Hurricane Rita also struck the Gulf Coast, making landfall just west of where Katrina came ashore. In the wake of these two storms, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) received 2.4 million applications for individual assistance.
