Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse: “Criminal prosecutions in the area of national internal security and terrorism have declined steadily since fiscal year 2002. According to the latest available data from the Justice Department, there were 128 such prosecutions recorded in the first eight months of FY 2014. At this pace, 192 individuals will be prosecuted for national internal security and terrorism offenses this year, a decline of 28.6 percent from FY 2013 and a drop of 84.1 percent from the peak of 1,208 reached in FY 2002. Levels of these prosecutions are still significantly higher than they were before 9/11. The most commonly cited lead charge so far in FY 2014 has been 18 USC 844, involving the importation and storage of explosives, accounting for 19 prosecutions. Second is 18 USC 1038 involving false information and hoaxes with 10 prosecutions. For more details, including a twenty-year timeline of prosecutions and top district rankings, see the report here.”
