News release: “New orders for manufactured goods in January, down following four consecutive monthly increases, decreased $10.8 billion or 2.5 percent to $429.2 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau reported today. This followed a 2.0 percent December increase. Shipments, up four of the last five months, increased $4.7 billion or 1.1 percent to $431.8 billion. This was at the highest level since the series was first stated on a NAICS basis in 1992 and followed a 0.4 percent December decrease. Unfilled orders, up thirty-two of the last thirty-three months, increased $5.3 billion or 0.7 percent to $813.3 billion. This was also at the highest level since the series was first stated on a NAICS basis in 1992 and followed a 2.5 percent December increase. The unfilled orders-to-shipments ratio was 5.38, down from 5.44 in December. Inventories, up eleven of the last twelve months, increased $6.7 billion or 1.3 percent to $535.4 billion. This was also at the highest level since the series was first stated on a NAICS basis in 1992 and followed a 0.9 percent December increase. The inventories-to-shipments ratio was unchanged at 1.24.”
