“The U.S. Census Bureau released a new brief on “Common Pay Patterns and Extra Earnings: 2013,” highlighting earnings through different types of payments. These data come from the Survey of Income and Program Participation. This brief examines the different types of pay received during calendar year 2013, including wage and salary, and extra earnings (which refers to commission, tips, overtime and bonus payments). This brief also provides information on earnings by sex, age, race and Hispanic origin. The Survey of Income and Program Participation is a longitudinal survey that samples the same individuals over a four-year period. It provides comprehensive information about the income and program participation of individuals and households in the United States, as well as the principal determinants of income and program participation. The data for this brief come from Wave 1 of the 2014 Survey of Income and Program Participation. Survey data allow the government to evaluate the effectiveness of federal, state and local programs.”
