British Royal Society Report: International information sharing needed to prevent nuclear threats

News release, March 8, 2008: “Information about the characteristics of nuclear and other radioactive materials stored and used by countries needs to be shared globally to combat the illicit trafficking of nuclear materials and nuclear terrorism, says a report published by the Royal Society. The report which looks at the issues surrounding the detection of nuclear threats such as the smuggling of nuclear warheads and radioactive materials to make dirty bombs concludes that shared international databases would aid the growing field of nuclear forensics by speeding up and improving the identification of the origins of nuclear materials. It is hoped that this may deter future terrorism attempts.”

  • Detecting nuclear and radiological materials, Royal Society Policy Document 07/08, March 2008: “The report sets detection technologies in the wider context of efforts towards improving nuclear security worldwide. It outlines the key technical challenges facing nuclear and radiological detection and sets out foreseeable technological developments. Finally it summarises cross-cutting issues and presents the key points that emerged at the workshop, which included:
    • “The requirement for robust prevention, detection and response capabilities to ensure nuclear security.
    • The importance of systems analysis and networking of detectors.
    • The value of aerial detection systems in preventative and responsive roles.
    • The need for improved nuclear forensics capabilities.
    • The requirement for increased international cooperation and coordination.”
