Brennan Center – Citizens United One Year Later

“Jan. 21, 2011 marks the one-year anniversary of the Supreme Court’s 5-4 decision in Citizens United, the ruling that loosened restrictions on corporate and union campaign spending. Despite wide bipartisan support for reform, corporate, securities and election laws across the country remain largely unchanged to this day. Public financing – vigorously pushed in the wake of the ruling – remains a key feasible reform, especially in New York state. Today, more than a dozen national reform groups are calling on Governor Andrew Cuomo to enact public financing in the Empire State to set a strong precedent for the rest of the country that the reform works and helps keep “we the people” at the center of our politics.
