“Dr Kathryn Simpson, UK Data Service Research Associate, has been much sought after during the UK’s EU Referendum campaign for her expertise in comparative European politics, political behaviour and public opinion. Kathryn provided extensive media coverage leading up to the vote, across the United Kingdom and internationally for the French TV news channel BFMTV. In her latest blog post, Making sense of Brexit – the data you need to analyse, she discusses the demand for reliable data to examine the wide ranging issues in the EU Referendum debate. Many of these data can be found at the UK Data Service and can also be used for post-Brexit analysis including, amongst others:
European Social Survey (ESS)
British Election Survey (BES)
British Social Attitudes Survey (BSA)
Annual Population Survey (APS)
Labour Force Survey (LFS)
Census data
Several of these datasets have featured in the press – see The UK’s EU Referendum: our data in the news, our Storify encapsulating the news articles leading up to the EU Referendum using data available from the UK Data Service.
Kathryn’s research at the University of Manchester covers how attitudes to inequality are linked to attitudes to European integration, as well as the link between public attitudes to inequality and public attitudes to the European Union in the context of economic crisis. Read her new article in the Journal of European Public Policy: Another chance? Concerns about inequality, support for the European Union and further European integration.
