“In September, employers took 1,486 mass layoff actions involving 133,379 workers. Events decreased for the third consecutive month, while associated initial claims decreased to its lowest level since April 2008. Manufacturing accounted for 345 mass layoff events, resulting in 34,168 initial claims. The national unemployment rate was 9.6 percent in September, seasonally adjusted, unchanged from the prior month and down from 9.8 percent a year earlier. In September, total nonfarm payroll employment decreased by 95,000 over the month but increased by 344,000 from a year earlier.”
