NIH Financial Conflict of Interest Notice of Proposed Rule Making

“Partnerships between NIH-funded researchers and industry are often essential to the process of moving discoveries from the bench to the bedside. However, managing Financial Conflicts of Interest (FCOI) can be a major challenge because of the complex relationships among government, academia, and industry. A Notice of Proposed Rulemaking, which is open for public comment for the next 60 days, proposes a general revision to the existing regulations.”

  • Science: “NIH is responding to growing public concerns that drug company money is biasing research, including a probe by Senator Charles Grassley (R–IA) of several psychiatrists with NIH funding who allegedly failed to disclose hundreds of millions of dollars in consulting income. The proposed regulation revises a 15-year-old Public Health Service rule that largely leaves it up to institutions to decide whether there’s a conflict and how to handle it.”
