WTOP: “The Weather Channel says the Washington D.C. area experienced the worst summer weather in the United States. The damaging thunderstorms that rolled through the region in late July and early August were the main reasons why. The Weather Channel says the storm that hit the area on July 25 had winds of 90 miles per hour. This first storm crippled the region’s power companies, with some area residents left in the dark for nearly a week. The storm that blew through the region on Aug. 5 hit the Del Ray section of Alexandria particularly hard, ripping large trees out of the ground and cutting power to over 60,000 residents. The third storm mentioned was the Aug. 12 storm that dropped trees and cut power in Gaithersburg and Silver Spring. Winds were clocked between 80 and 90 mph during the storm…The worst summer weather award comes after The Weather Channel called the 2010 winter the second-worst in the country.”
